China Porcelain Master Liu Mingzhi Introduction

     

 Master Liu was born in Dehua, the world's ceramic capital, in 1973. In 1990, he learned his craft at the century-old folk brand "Yunyu Porcelain Shop". He studied at Dehua Ceramics Institute and Tsinghua University Academy of Fine Arts, graduated from Jiangxi Jingdezhen Ceramics Institute with a major in ceramic sculpture design in 2013, and graduated from Fujian Normal University with a major in art design in 2017. 

 

On the road of creation, he constantly draws nourishment from the "He" technique. While inheriting Dehua's traditional porcelain carving skills, he pays attention to the combination of inheritance and innovation, the pursuit of perfection and adherence to the original heart, and is based on the current aesthetic taste, achieving a unique skill and style. He is particularly good at performing traditional Dehua porcelain sculpture skills on site. His "thin-body porcelain sculpture series" is a unique work among porcelain sculptures. His works have won the gold medal of China Arts and Crafts "Hundred Flowers Award" for more than 20 consecutive times, the gold medal of China Arts and Crafts Fair, and the gold medal of China Ceramic Art Innovation Grand Prix, and have won silver, bronze, and excellence awards dozens of times. More than ten of his works have been collected by national, provincial, and municipal museums.

 

He is currently a senior arts and crafts artist, a senior technician of ceramic sculpture, a national first-class artist, a technical expert in the national ceramic industry, a technical expert in Fujian Province, a gold medal worker in Fujian Province, a master of traditional Chinese arts and crafts, a master of arts and crafts in Fujian Province, a master of ceramic art in Fujian Province, a representative inheritor of Quanzhou's intangible cultural heritage, a member of the 10th and 11th Dehua County CPPCC, a model worker of Dehua County, a visiting senior lecturer of Dehua Vocational and Technical School, a visiting professor of Fujian Engineering College, a visiting professor of Quanzhou Information Engineering College, a part-time professor of Quanzhou Huaguang Academy of Fine Arts, a visiting professor of Fujian Art Vocational College, a member of the China Arts and Crafts Society, an executive director of the Ceramic Art Committee of the China Ceramic Industry Association, an executive director of the Fujian Arts and Crafts Society, vice president of the Fujian Sculpture Artists Association, vice president of the Fujian Handicraft Manufacturing Enterprise Chamber of Commerce, and deputy director of the Ceramic Art Committee of the Fujian Ceramic Industry Association.

Work name: Jing·Lotus

The subject matter is based on the Guanyin Buddha statue in the white-drawing painting. The material is made of Dehua's unique high white clay. With the reference of the white-drawing technique, it is combined with Dehua's traditional skills of pinching, molding, carving, engraving, scraping, joining, and pasting. The structure of the work shows a simple, clear, pure and stable state, showing the classic incarnation image of "lotus branches with leaves", one of the 33 incarnations of Guanyin.
In May 2013, the work won the gold medal of the 7th Fujian Arts and Crafts "Zhengyan Cup" Competition. In June 2013, the work was collected by the Fujian Arts and Crafts Treasure Museum. In March 2016, the work "Jing·Lotus" was permanently collected by the Fujian Strait Folk Art Museum.

Work name: Ying Zheng·Qin Shi Huang

The work is based on the founding emperor of the Qin Dynasty, who was the first to unify China. Later generations called him "the greatest emperor of all time". Qin Shi Huang followed the trend of history, destroyed the six kingdoms and unified China, ending the long-term separatist and chaotic situation of the princes, which was in line with the wishes of the people; he established a centralized system, unified writing, currency, weights and measures, etc., consolidated the unity, promoted economic and cultural exchanges between various regions and ethnic groups, and had a profound impact on future generations. It shows that Qin Shi Huang made great contributions to the history of our country.
The work portrays the image of a man wearing Qin clothes, holding a sword in his left hand, hiding his right hand in his sleeve, looking forward with a firm face, and standing proudly with his chest and belly raised, depicting his character traits of having great ambitions and foresight. The creation adopts the Dehua traditional ceramic sculpture technique. The lines of the folds are simple and smooth, strong and powerful, and the turns are natural, which can make people feel the power bursting from the inside out, showing his imperial style. In 2013, the work "Ying Zheng" was permanently collected by the Fujian Arts and Crafts Treasure Museum. In October 2014, "Qin Shi Huang" won the "China Arts and Crafts Gold Award" at the 16th China (National) Arts and Crafts Masters Boutique Expo.

 

Work name: Boy worshipping Guanyin

The work takes Guanyin Bodhisattva as the theme, and the waves are cleverly designed into the shape of Ruyi, with simple and clear line structure to express the technique, depicting Guanyin's kind and dignified appearance, shining on the world, and the lively and lovely boy who distributes wealth standing on the lotus at the end of the waves to worship Guanyin. The material is high-quality kaolin from Dehua. In July 2013, "Boy Worshipping Guanyin" won the gold medal in the third "Earth Award" ceramic works competition, and in May 2014, "Boy Worshipping Guanyin" won the gold medal in the China Arts and Crafts "Hundred Flowers Award" competition.

 

 

Work name: Thin-body Guanyin

The work is based on the theme of Guanyin who saves all living beings. It uses Dehua high-quality high-white clay and combines Dehua traditional skills such as pinching, molding, carving, engraving, scraping, cutting, joining and pasting. When creating, the focus is on the production process of "thin as paper and distinct layers" in the structure of clothing folds. Its special art practice reflects the author's rich experience and superb skills. And give full play to the advantages of traditional sculpture "expressive and freehand", and carefully carve the face, expression, facial features, hair, clothing folds, textures, etc. of the characters in the work one by one, forming a soft and smooth, clear and concise, both physical and spiritual, and subtly showing the charm of Guanyin who is kind and dignified, shining on the world, with infinite wisdom and magical powers, and saving the suffering of the world. It reflects the creator's persistent pursuit of traditional art and the unique style of porcelain sculpture. In May 2012, "Thin-Bodied Free-Stayed Guanyin" won the gold medal in the Chinese Arts and Crafts "Hundred Flowers Award".

Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva is one of the "Three Saints of Saṃsāra" in Buddhists. He is as patient and immovable as the earth, and as deep and profound as Ksitigarbha. "Earth" in fact means the earth, which is what all things depend on for survival. Nothing can survive without the earth, so "earth" means that it can hold, nurture, carry, and give birth. In November 2017, the work "Earth" was permanently collected by the National Art Museum of China. In December 2017, the work won the gold medal of the first China World Heritage Arts and Crafts "Golden Lion Award".
